Soul HarvestingSoul BindingOthmog

From the Southern Chronicles of Irat Yuregir

“The arcane guilds of the South preach that knowledge elevates the soul. This is why its magisters understand neither. Knowledge is a serrated blade and the soul is merely the deepest place into which it may cut.”

Ihave heard the learned geldings of the South call Demon Magic an insult to the arcane crafts. Ignorant fools even describe it as a school, as though the devastation of Othmog might be shelved beside Evocation and Illusion, reduced to diagrams, and taught to soft-handed apprentices beneath the protection of licensed masters. Such were the final words of several scholars before I offered their tongues to my master Shukosh and bound their souls within our crystals.

Demon Magic is not a school, nor is it an art that can be taught, though art may be made from it. It is not a weapon, though entire nations have been butchered through its incantations. It is the boon by which Entropy reveals the frailty of Harmony’s power. May Her name be cursed for all eternity.

It entered our world with the Archdemons when Entropy corrupted the dreams of Harmony and reached through the Nightmare Plane to summon them. Their arrival extended Entropy’s grasp of the Spires. They did not discover their magic through inheritance, as the vanquished Drakil did, nor did they refine it through generations of patient study, as the Fey advanced arcane magic. No master entrusted the mysteries of our Lords’ magic to them as one might entrust a craft to a worthy disciple. Unlike the failed arts of mortal races now lying in ruin, their magic was born complete within them.

Demon Magic

Demon Magic manifests corruption’s full potential by giving it limitless hunger, and the power to undo creation at its foundations. It crushes life, memory, and virtue, proving that terror and absolute power reign over the frail gifts of Harmony. Our Demon Lords do not distinguish between these things as mortals do. To them, courage and cowardice are merely different flavours within the soul. Love burns brightly, but briefly. Devotion burns longer, but blindly and hope is difficult to extract, yet it yields a particularly strong energy when it is finally broken.

Demons favour no one out of gratitude. They bestow fragments of their power upon generals, chosen bloodlines and faithful disciples. These fragments are purchased through sacrifice, submission, and deeds of absolute obedience. Yet do not mistake our fealty for the blind loyalty of southerners to their divine masters. We are not sheep. At the first sign of weakness, our blades draw blood from mortal prey and demon alike. Demonic blood may awaken gifts in mortal descendants: unnatural strength, commanding voices, flesh that resists flame, sight that pierces shadow, or an instinctive capacity to wound the souls of others. These inherited gifts are innate and distinct from soul-fuelled powers, though soul energy can strengthen them further.

Rituals of summoning permit mortal practitioners to borrow still greater powers. Yet no bargain with a demon grants mastery over the granted spell itself. We cannot wield our Lords’ magic. They merely extend a portion of their effects through us, using our bodies and minds as conduits.

This distinction is lost on the spellcasters of the Alliance nations. Their academies have produced generations of perfumed cowards who believe that danger becomes harmless once it has been named in one of their dead languages. They draw their circles, consult their spellbooks, and speak of controlled invocation. They condemn us as savages while surrounding themselves with wards woven from the labour of broken men, inherited relics, and powers they scarcely comprehend.

I have observed Alliance magisters along the southern borders. I concede that they are disciplined. Some make formidable trophies in my keep, but none are as innocent as they claim to be. Their hatred of Demon Magic is not born from virtue. It is born from envy and fear. They cannot tolerate a power that refuses to recognise their laws, their councils, or their precious distinctions between acceptable and forbidden slaughter. An Alliance battle-mage may burn fifty soldiers to ash and be praised as a hero. Let a Helkorian Soulbinder imprison one enemy officer within a crystal, and the same mage begins speaking of abomination.

My enmity is salt. It preserves me and seasons the offerings that feed my masters for as long as I remain useful to them. I study the Alliance casters because I despise them. I learn their signs, their casting habits, the limits of their concentration, and the small gestures by which they conceal fear. My anger is flame, fed when fire turns their cities and children to cinders.

Soul Harvesting instant · violent
Pierce shell Strands drawn Throbbing extraction Memory stripped Soul emptied

Soul Harvesting is the demonic practice of separating a soul’s power from its identity. Our masters teach us that a soul is not a single substance. It contains vitality, memory, will, instinct, virtue or corruption, and karmic weight. These elements are bound together so tightly that mortal scholars cannot distinguish their individual strands. Our Lords see where each strand lies as clearly as we see Therril’s sheltering darkness gnaw at the blighted sun. They know which may be cut, which may be pulled, and which must be tormented until they ripen.

The extraction begins when demonic force pierces the outer shell of the soul. There is no flesh there, yet the victim feels the cut more intimately than any wound of the body. A knife driven through the heart is sharp pain felt in one place. A hook driven into the soul is felt through every memory the victim has ever possessed, through his skin, bones and blood. The demon pulls, and the soul stretches around the intrusion. Childhood, desires, and self-knowledge are drawn into thin strands. The victim experiences them all at once, reliving each as a present reality twisted by pain. A mother’s face appears, only to be dragged apart. A first love is relived until tenderness becomes agony. Every failure returns with its original sting and every moment of happiness is torn open so that the warmth within it may be consumed. The soul has no throat, but it screams and even these are not wasted, for terror itself contains energy.

Demons harvest in throbs. They draw power from the soul, allow it to contract, and then tear it open again. The brief pause permits the victim to believe that perhaps the torment has ended. When the magic hooks return, the destruction of that hope produces another yield. Demons with the patience to prolong it draw out the extraction, although this is usually performed by our soul binders. They peel memory from memory, forcing the soul to witness each piece as it is devoured. The demon may begin with lesser recollections: the taste of bread, the sound of rain, or the face of an unimportant acquaintance and then proceed inward. Skills disappear, languages collapse into meaningless sounds and familiar places become empty shapes. Then come loyalties, loves, and the innermost details by which the victim once understood himself. Near the end, only a central vague awareness remains.

This cycle may be repeated many times until the soul is empty. With every extraction, it grows dimmer. Memories lose their emotional attachments, convictions separate from the experiences that formed them and a victim may remember having loved as a child yet no longer understand what love felt like. He may recall his own name but experience it as the name of a stranger. Eventually, the soul begins to forget the person in which it once existed.

This is how demons harness soul energy out of battle. They do not simply burn the soul as one burns wood. They strip it layer by layer, converting it into force. That force may sustain a summoning, feed a transformation, strengthen a weapon, open a path through the Nightmare Plane, animate the dead, or nourish our Demon Lords. Throughout much of the process, the victim remains conscious breeding an intoxicating frenzy into the caster who struggles to maintain this gradual pull.

Soul Entrapment slow · corrupting
Harvest complete Crystal imprisonment Facets compress soul Sealed & milled for energy

Soul Entrapment is the deliberate violation of the Soul Spire, Othmog’s spit cast onto Harmony’s accursed face. Following the harvest, the soul is imprisoned within a crystal prepared by rituals and contained into a receptacle demons can preserve, transport, exchange, or consume. I have fashioned such vessels and I have witnessed them while being filled. The sounds of agony are ecstatic and my masters struggle to not outrightly consume the soul which does not enter willingly. It strikes on the crystal’s inner boundaries and recoils, only to find every direction barred. The crystal’s enchantment tightens in response to resistance. Each attempt to escape causes the prison to contract. The soul is pressed into an ever narrower, sharper confinement while the prison’s might feeds upon the anguish of this struggle.

Memory is forced against memory. Contradictory emotions are driven through one another. Love is pressed into hatred. Pride is folded around humiliation. The soul is compressed against the crystal’s facets until every surface contains a portion of the victim’s awareness. Then the binding marks are sealed. Within the crystal, the victim feels itself divided without being granted the mercy of death. A memory pinned against one facet may watch another memory being stripped away. Time ceases to pass and becomes a prison of its own.

The crystal is not merely a container. It is a mill that grinds the soul, preparing it to be consumed. When energy is required, the demon or Soulbinder draws a measured portion through the crystal’s surface. Its facets cut through the imprisoned essence like serrated glass dragged across exposed flesh. What emerges is usable force. What remains is forced back into the prison, weaker and less coherent than before.

Repeated harvesting leaves marks resembling deep black fissures within the soul. These are not physical deformities, yet they throb whenever the victim attempts to remember itself. Thoughts fall through them, and feelings disappear midway through being felt. The soul becomes a dark house of empty, crumbling rooms.

If such a crystal is shattered, the soul is freed but not restored. The soul spills out without shape, unable to gather its scattered memories. Some fragments attempt to flee, while others remain attached to the broken crystal. The soul may spend years drawing itself together before it can even perceive the direction of the Pool. If the soul was heavily consumed, it may require generations to reassemble and some never do.

This is the origin of the Fallen: bodies that continue to breathe, hunger, sleep, and bleed after the soul has been removed from their bodies. Many die but those who dont still function like being alive. They may respond to pain, seek food, or imitate familiar habits, but the actual person within them is gone. To look into the eyes of a Fallen is to see an absolute absence of feelings, like a palace from which every inhabitant has departed while the lanterns continue to burn. From this practice arose the Atoles and other places where existence continues after purpose has been torn away.

Soul Drain instant · violent
Threat detected Instant tearing Energy released Fragments discarded

When threat is near the harvest is performed erratically, brutally, tearing the soul apart in an instant and releasing its energies through the invoked powers. Through Soul Drain, a demon consumes the greater part of what a soul has become. The process is rapid when only power is required, and when it completes the victim no longer possesses a name, history, affection, or purpose. It knows only that it exists and that existence is pain.

A drained soul is rarely destroyed completely. Demons are not merciful, but they are capable of calculation. Absolute annihilation often requires more effort than the remaining fragments are worth, so the rest is discarded. Those pieces may eventually find their way back towards the Pool, but recovery is a long process. The Pool calls to a healthy soul as the earth calls to falling rain. A drained soul cannot answer this call properly, while its karmic weight has been torn apart. Its memories no longer form a path to the Pool and it may drift, turn against itself or follow false impressions left by the demon that fed upon it.

Even when freed, such a soul may require years, decades, or longer to reach the Pool. During that time, it remains exposed to predators, necromancers, corrupted places, and the echoes of its own torment. Some fragments cling to the site of their imprisonment. Others follow living relatives without remembering why. Many circle soul crystals, sensing within those prisons a suffering resembling their own. Reaching the Pool does not guarantee that every such wound is erased.

The Pool may cleanse corruption and restore the soul to the cycle, but some injuries lie too deep to be removed without stripping away the threads of identity. Such scars can survive reincarnation. In its new life, the soul may awaken screaming from dreams it cannot remember or experience grief without a reason and even terror without a threat. Some reincarnated souls are born unable to feel joy without pain accompanying it. Others cannot bear enclosed spaces because some part of them evoke the crystal prison and a few hear distant screaming whenever they sleep as the body revives pain engraved in the soul. Such is the power of my masters that even Harmony’s works fumble to match.

Soul Withering aftermath
Torn from passage Not consumed or contained Cast loose, ragged Becomes the Withered

When demons tear a soul away from its proper passage to the Pool without fully consuming or containing it, the remains are cast loose, ragged and incapable of finding their way back. These remnants may become Wraiths, Wights, Spectres, and the other incorporeal undead whom the Iron Knights name the Withered.

A Withered soul is not merely trapped between life and death. It has been damaged so thoroughly that it no longer knows where rebirth lies. It clings to fragments of memory and to an unconscious hatred of what was done to it. Some repeat their final moments without understanding them. Others hunt the living because warmth reminds them of what was removed. The worst retain their intelligence. They know what they have become and they remember the Pool, yet the damage within them twists its call into bitterness, and they turn instead against the living.

The Value of the Imprisoned

Soul crystals are not just enchanted stones. They are prisons and our most valuable granaries. Within each remains a being denied passage to the Pool and rendered suitable for demonic use. A lesser crystal may strengthen a summoning, feed a mutation, sustain a corrupted weapon, or preserve a ritual beyond the life of its maker. A powerful soul may nourish a Demon Lord, a fortress, or an army for generations.

Angelic souls are prized above nearly all others. Grace adheres to them with remarkable tenacity. Although angelic essence is exceedingly difficult to harvest and an angel’s identity resists being flayed away, its grace continues to burn, allowing demons to feed upon it for an age. Their resistance makes angelic prisoners difficult to harness, but their power of recovery makes them invaluable once properly bound. The essence within them replenishes itself so swiftly that it can become an almost inexhaustible current, sufficient to sustain obscene heights of power. Seeking such souls entails grave danger since Angels will hunt to free them to the outskirts of time befalling certain death to the Lords that dared such a blasphemy.

Towers such as Yaldaret are said to contain enough imprisoned spirits to deepen Graazt’s dominion merely by standing. I cannot confirm the number of souls within our citadel’s foundations, but I can confirm that structures fed by souls acquire appetites of their own, as though they possessed a crude sentience. Endless caravans bear soul crystals towards Othmog as tribute and proof of our fealty to the Lords. They are heavily guarded against Korr raiders and others who seek to free the souls imprisoned within them.

The Servant and the Chain

Mortal Soulbinders imitate demonic practices through magic circles, invocations, mutilations, and blood-bargains written in signs no mortal language can contain. Some become so skilled that they can imitate a fraction of our Lords’ magnificence.

Every use of a soul crystal strengthens the connection between the practitioner and the demon who revealed him these dark arts. At first, the caster merely feels watched. Later, his dreams cease to belong entirely to him, and his voice acquires tones he did not intend. Eventually, the distinction between servant and vassal becomes meaningless.

I have studied the dark crafts to the extent that any mortal may truthfully claim affinity. I know how to prepare a soul crystal, how to divide its yield, and how to extract energy without immediately destroying the imprisoned essence. I know the words that terrify a captive soul and the words that make it struggle to increase the force of the harvest. Yet I do not pretend that the power is mine. It passes through my hands because greater beings permit it.

That is the difference between my understanding and the arrogance of the Alliance magisters: they believe they are masters of their knowledge. I know that it merely permits a servant to measure the exact length of his chains.

Power taken from a soul always leaves a wound in both the victim and the wielder. Given time, such wounds may deepen into doors through which Entropy enters the world. The demons will destroy their enemies, just as they will destroy their servants, the temples raised in their names, and the nations conquered beneath their banners. Few understand that this is not betrayal. It is our legacy fulfilled. All things perish, and only the chosen possess the clarity to kneel before that truth.

“May Harmony find a body and rot within it alongside Her creation. The Last Darkness has been promised to us, and Her docile slaves will suffer beside Her.”
