FLOATING CITYANGELIC SANCTUARYSERMONCLOUD CITY

Cloudkeep is less a kingdom and more a miracle suspended in the heavens. Floating above the world, it serves as a sanctuary of angels and one of the oldest bastions of Harmony. Its towers shine above the clouds while the lands below look to it for guidance and protection.

Many faiths regard Cloudkeep with reverence, though few are ever permitted to walk its streets. Even after all my travels, I still find it difficult to decide whether it is a city, a fortress, or a reminder that the world was once more wondrous than it is today.

History & Founding

Cloudkeep belongs to the first angelic age, when Harmony crafted the Angels to defend Creation and Sermon’s kind first flew among Fey and Thergen bearing the gifts of civilization. The old records speak of many angelic keeps and floating citadels guarding the daybreak line: Acermon over Kinetika and Starfall, Elion, Ivorhia and Myre among the Eladrin lands, Orion watching Othmog, and western and southern sky-keeps now ruined or lost. Of those northern wonders, Cloudkeep remains the fairest still standing: the Sky Crest, the silvery fort of the angels, and a bastion of Law.

There is no mortal-style founding year for Cloudkeep. Its first direct historical touch with mortal kingdoms appears in 1783 BS, when Nathayl son of Moranis saw Cloudkeep, received Sermon’s revelation, and began the chain of events that would become Heraldon. This fits the older lore: Cloudkeep had already endured for ages before men looked up and understood what hovered above them.

During the Years of Refuge, as darkness covered Therra and poisoned winds spread across the surface, Cloudkeep rose above the ash-clouds while the mountain cities sheltered the races below. Later, in 30 BS, heavy demon forces invaded Cloudkeep. Part of its floating battlements fell like meteorites and destroyed Lyden, the first Halfmen city. In 78 AS, Sermon’s old Stasis Field faded, releasing Angels, Heraldians, and demons from their suspension. Zoodotis burned exposed demons, the surviving forces reinforced Heraldon and Cloudkeep significantly, and the rebuilding of the city began.

Myth says that Angels don’t truly die, but their souls return to the Pool like mortals do. One day Harmony may choose to manifest their grand scores again, when Entropy threatens to engulf creation. Until then their fallen brethren remain, waiting.

Government & Succession

Cloudkeep is not ruled like a mortal kingdom. Its authority rests in angelic hierarchy, ancient duty, and the Council of Wings, summoned upon an elevated floating cathedral shaped like an hourglass. Sermon, Thearetos, and Gregorian remain the highest powers associated with the city, though the Archangels are usually far from mortal sight and do not appear in their truest forms.

There is no hereditary succession in the mortal sense. Rank follows soul, angelic degree, service to Harmony, and command in the eternal war against Entropy. Lesser angels, archons, wardens, and emissaries answer to higher orders of celestial authority, while mortal rulers who seek Cloudkeep’s counsel receive guidance only when the Angels judge intervention necessary.

This restraint is deliberate. Angelic keeps were not raised to separate Angels from Creation, but to prevent constant interference with mortal free will. Cloudkeep protects, warns, and intervenes, yet it does not govern the surface realms in place of their own strength.

Society & Culture

Cloudkeep is built for beings who move in three dimensions. Its archways, interconnecting bridges, elevated plateaus, hanging sanctuaries, wing-shaped halls, and impossible passages are not arranged for mortal feet. To a traveler from below, the city feels less like streets and more like a hymn given stone, silver, wind, and light.

The angels themselves are beautiful and terrible to behold: light-burning eyes, golden crests of hair, shimmering nimbus, feathered wings, and bodies that may carry armor as though it had grown from their souls. Many can take mortal form, but their true nature remains difficult for mortals to bear. Higher angels may seem almost like living energy, and Archangels are veiled from direct sight.

Cloudkeep’s society never sleeps in any ordinary sense. Its inhabitants have no mortal need for food, drink, or rest, though their material bodies can function as they choose. Family bonds are not treated as surface peoples treat them. Children are gifts of life and bloodline, often raised by mortal parents or caretakers. Outsiders may mistake angelic restraint for coldness, but their emotions are forged inward, disciplined by introspection and ancient responsibility, although love and affection for mortals is common.

Faith

Cloudkeep is one of the oldest visible signs of Harmony in the world. Sermon is revered as the First Angel and the guardian of Preservation, Life, and Harmony, Thearetos as the judge of justice and purity of soul, and Gregorian as protector of life in all its forms. Zoodotis is honored through hymns that rise from the towers during the day, chanting the darkness away.

Faith here is beyond worship. It is embedded in architecture, law, music, and war discipline. The Cathedral of Eternals, the silver belfries, the statues of angelic heroes, and the blessed waters falling toward the lands below all proclaim that Creation is worth defending.

Mortals often mistake Cloudkeep’s holiness for elitism. The angels believe mercy, justice, and order must be guarded by unbreakable will and endless sacrifice, for corruption does not stop because the pure ask it kindly.

Military

War has been the occupation of angels since their first appearance. Cloudkeep’s defenders include angelic legions, archons, brilliance-blade duelists, celestial steel wardens, and beings whose armor is both weapon and bulwark. They are masters of single combat, but the city itself is also a fortress of heights, light, blessed waters, suspended battlements, and impossible angles.

The angels fight Entropy’s servants wherever the spires demand it. They opposed Asmodeus at the Pool beside Sermon, Thearetos, and Gregorian. They have battled demons, devils, Helkorian darkness, Dagon’s horrors, and the corruptions of Othmog. The old Stasis Field and the Angel Cross show the scale of their magic: entire forces could be preserved outside the normal course of time until the appointed trigger.

Cloudkeep’s military strength is not measured only in numbers. Its greatest weapon is intervention at the right moment. A single angelic envoy, one revealed prophecy, or one resurrected champion can alter the course of a spire.

Economy & Trade

Cloudkeep does not trade like a mortal port or market city. Its economy is sanctified craft, divine service, protection, knowledge, relics, healing, and rare intervention. Thergen crafters, Aenarch sculptors, and divinely inspired artists once adorned its battlements and structures with silver, platinum, and holy design, suggesting that the city has accepted mortal craftsmanship when purpose and purity align.

Blessed water, celestial steel, angelic inscriptions, healing rites, and counsel from the Council of Wings are worth more than coin. Yet these are not commodities. They are granted or entrusted according to need and Harmony’s design.

The surface realms benefit indirectly too from Cloudkeep’s presence. Its light steadies the faithful, its envoys strengthen alliances, and its legends sustain morale in places where ordinary politics would have failed long ago.

Foreign Relations

Heraldon owes its spiritual birth to Cloudkeep, for Nathayl’s revelation began beneath the angelic city and Sermon’s words became the root of Heraldian faith. Lakedawn’s early Halfmen lived under Cloudkeep’s protection at Lyden, and Gordion later guided the survivors after the city’s destruction. Starfall, Erenor, the Thergen Empire, Avaton, Kinetika, Everday, and Andor all stand within the broad web of realms that honor or rely upon angelic opposition to Entropy.

Cloudkeep does not behave as an ordinary ally. It rarely answers petitions in the way kings desire, and many rulers find angelic silence more troubling than refusal. Yet when demonic plots gather or the balance of the spires turns, Cloudkeep acts with terrifying precision.

Its enemies are every power that feeds Entropy: Othmog, Helkor, Graazt, demonkind, devilkind when they threaten Creation, and Dagon’s sea-borne horrors. The angels know that corruption does not always march in armies. Sometimes it arrives as despair, pride, impatience, or the temptation to break free will for a noble purpose.

  • The Spire of Heavenly Light — The brightest towers of Cloudkeep, associated with Sermon, Thearetos, and Gregorian, and rarely approached by mortals.
  • The Silver Belfries — High towers whose chimes carry across the cold winds and valleys below, calming the faithful and warning against darkness.
  • The Fallen Battlements — Broken portions of Cloudkeep cast down during the demon invasion of 30 BS, remembered for the destruction of Lyden and the burial of Halfmen history beneath Stonend Lake.
  • The Blessed Springs — Waters falling from angelic structures toward the surface, revered as signs of protection, healing, and Harmony’s continuing mercy.
  • The Old Angelic Keeps — Ruined or abandoned bastions in remote places, untrodden mountains, and Evernight, once part of the wider angelic defense network.

Adventure Hooks

  • The Last Stone of Lyden — Halfmen priests ask the party to recover a sanctified stone from the Fallen Battlements beneath Stonend Lake, but the fragment still carries the memory of the demon assault that tore it from Cloudkeep.
  • The Silent Belfry — One of the Silver Belfries stops chiming for the first time in centuries. Angels do not explain why, but every cleric of Sermon dreams of wings burning in a sky without sound.
  • The Stasis Remnant — A small pocket of Sermon’s old Stasis Field has not faded. Inside it stand angels, Heraldians, and demons locked at the instant before slaughter. Breaking the field may save allies or release an ancient enemy.
  • The Mortal Visitor — A surface-born child with angelic blood is summoned to Cloudkeep, but Heraldian zealots, Helkorian spies, and a devilish agent all seek to claim the child before the Council of Wings can judge the soul.
  • The Corrupted Spring — One of Cloudkeep’s blessed springs reaches the surface blackened. The corruption is not from Othmog, but from a broken oath sworn by an angel long believed pure.
  • Gordion’s Unfinished Warning — Old writings left by Gordion hint that the place chosen for Lakedawn concealed a second danger beneath the lakes, one Cloudkeep could see but never reveal without violating mortal choice.
  • The Archangel’s Closed Eyes — Several angels in Cloudkeep fall into a strange sleep, echoing memories seen by mortal dreamers. The trail leads toward the Plane of Dreams, Ramanthus, and a nightmare meant to blind the city before invasion.
  • The Lost Keep of Ninerond — A ruined western sky-keep sends a signal only Cloudkeep can read. The party must reach it before Helkorian soulbinders transform the old angelic bastion into a weapon.
  • Trial Before the Council — A mortal hero demands angelic intervention in a southern war. The Council of Wings agrees to hear the plea, but the trial tests whether the hero seeks justice or only a divine weapon.
  • The Brilliance Blade — A fallen angelic blade appears in a mortal marketplace. Anyone who carries it hears the command to return it to Cloudkeep, while demons hunt its light across the roads.
